Tips safety during with Bonfire Night

This evening millions of people around the UK will gather on village greens or a local field to watch firework displays and warm themselves up around a bonfire, all in memory of Guy Fawkes.
While it is an evening that youngsters love, it will only be a success if everyone is safe and the event passes off with no major incidents. Parents should ensure that they are well aware of the dangers of Bonfire Night and how they can keep their family out of harm's way.

Fireworks can travel at speeds of up to 150mph, so these should only be let off by experts and everyone else should stand well back. It is illegal for shops to sell these items to anyone under the age of 18, but it is important that the big kids act responsibly too.

Throwing a firework is a criminal offence and can be result in a fine of up to £5,000.

Sparklers are a favourite among children who love making shapes in the air. However, they must make sure that they are concentrating on what they are doing and not misbehaving, as the heat of three of these burning together is the same as that of a blowtorch used for joining metal.

In a recent year, 990 injuries were reported during October and November because of fireworks, with 494 of these being children. Almost 500 people of all ages require hospital treatment after they have been injured by fireworks and sparklers, with 121 incidents occurring during public displays.

The chances of something going wrong are greater at private parties where trained experts are unlikely to be in attendance. According to statistics, 475 injuries occurred at family events.

Pets should also be looked after on Bonfire Night, as many of them will be scared by the loud bangs and flashes of light in the dark sky.
Make sure they are taken for a good walk before the evening, while all curtains and windows should be closed and the TV turned on to provide a distraction.
